Whether or not you currently wear glasses or contact lenses, an eye exam is an important part of proactive vision care. At Central Nassau Optical, our eye doctor uses the latest technology to evaluate your vision health and detect potential problems that could lead to compromised vision in the future. Eye exams are especially important for older individuals who are at increased risk for conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. These conditions require prompt care in order to prevent or lessen vision loss.

Eye Care Check Up Important Even If You Do Not Wear Glasses

If you wear glasses or contact lenses for vision correction and it has been longer than a year since you last visited an eye doctor, then you’re overdue for an eye exam and may need a prescription adjustment in order to see clearly. Even if you do not currently wear glasses or contact lenses, you may still benefit from an eye exam. You may need an eye exam if: (1) you hold books, newspapers or magazines further away from your face in order to read the text; or (2) you squint or close one eye in order to read these materials more clearly. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if you are squinting to read material or hold books/notes closer than usual, as these changes can happen gradually over time. If you are experiencing headaches, eye strain, double vision, or difficulty seeing at night, then these are all signs that you need an eye exam. Finally, if your eyes are red, dry, or itchy, or you are seeing spots or flashes of color, then you should also schedule an eye exam.

If it’s been a while since you’re last eye care check up, then you may be wondering what to expect. The good news is that a routine eye exam is an easy, painless and straightforward procedure. First, our eye doctor will ask you to read a standard eye chart that is placed 20 feet away. You will be asked to identify the letters along the lines of increasingly smaller sizes until the letters can no longer be identified. Standard vision is “ 20/20”, which means you are able to read the line that is the fourth from the bottom without any vision assistance. Next, we will determine how well your eyes work together as a team. This is known as binocular coordination. Our eye doctor will also test your peripheral vision. Finally, during the eye care check up, our eye doctor will also check glaucoma and degenerative vision conditions that require prompt intervention.

Should you need vision correction, our eye doctor will discuss your different options, including glasses and contact lenses. In some cases, our patients may also benefit from LASIK eye surgery, a procedure that could eliminate the need for glasses and contacts.
